| Locum spending can be a drain on
any Medical Staffing budget - unfortunately its also essential.
The key to effective Locum spending is to understand which posts are proving
most expensive. In most Trusts only 10% of posts account for 50% of Locum
spending. By identifying these roles and tackling their problems you can have a
disproportionately large impact on your Locum spending.
Typically these posts are incurring excess costs for one of the following
reasons:
-
Rota design - if a Rota is poorly designed it can be creating your problem
position(s)
-
Rota planning - a Rota must be realistic in its aims if it isn't to create a
backlog for a future date
-
Unplanned leave - if you don't have sufficient notice of your doctors'
intentions then you can't plan for the changes
Even beyond high cost posts there are often savings to be made - for example -
many Locums are employed even on Rotas with prospective cover.
