| Rota building is much more
complex than it was even a few years ago. The impact of the New Deal and the
European Working Time Directive (EWTD) has created a network of rules and
limits that restrict when doctors can, and should, work.
The aim of these regulations was to lessen the working hours of Junior Doctors.
It has achieved this but it has also made the planning of these working hours
and activities significantly more complex.
Working with the majority of trusts to help them build their Rotas, we see many
of the problems and issues experienced today. Common Rota-building problems
faced by Medical Staffing departments today include:
-
Calculating prospective cover - am I applying the formula correctly?
-
Frequency of out-of-hours work - what is the ratio of on-call duties on a Rota?
-
Unsociability of hours - what proportion of the total hours worked are deemed
unsociable?
-
Building cross departmental 'complex' Rotas - how to combine multiple Rotas in
to one?
Even the most experienced Rota-builders - who can answer such questions easily -
rely on software as it is the only way to build, and amend, compliant Rotas
quickly and accurately.
